Fall colors on the temple grounds

On January 3, 2009, just before the temple closed for two weeks of cleaning, Steve and Elva came to spend a few days with us. They attended the temple and then we spent 3 days showing them sites of the area including some we had not seen. The weather cooperated and we had a great time.

It has been very special to have many of our family arrange to come out and spend time with us.

December at the Visitor Center

During each evening of December, following the "lighting ceremony" by Washington dignitaries on the 5th, various musical groups offer 2 and sometimes 3 performances in the 540 seat auditorium in the visitors center. They are free and thousands come to see the shows and to see the 450,000 colored lights that illuminate the temple grounds.

This picture shows the crowded foyer and also shows a reflection of the Christus inside the Center, making it appear to be the Savior outside the temple.

A visit from Ben and Anne

When Ben and Anne came to see us they helped us set up this blog. We had no idea what a "blog" was (still not sure) but they seemed to think we ought to have one. We tried a few times to add something to this blog but to no avail. With a month before we are to go home we have figured out how to do some basic things and are now trying to catch up with postings we should have done much earlier.

What a beautiful place to serve

One might get the impression that we only entertained guests and toured the historic sights of this area.....but they would be off the mark somewhat.

We served at this beautiful temple from about 7am to 2pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. On Saturday evenings we were there from 5 until 10pm. We were also there on Monday holidays when the temple was open. This temple serves patrons from 41 surrounding stakes and many visitors from through out the world that come to visit the capital city.

The interior of this temple is as beautiful as the exterior. It is situated in a private wooded area but is close to the freeway and gives motorists a spectacular sight as they drive by this large building.

In May, after Justin finished his semester at ISU, he brought his family to visit us. Emily is 3 1/2 now and we were so glad she was able to come. We showed her many beautiful butterflies in a nearby park. We were also able to visit the Gettysburg battlefield, and historic sights in DC.

During the spring we had a short visit with Bill and Virginia. We drove to visit Boyd and Nada Buxton, who live in Virginia. Boyd, Nada, Bill and Vernon all graduated together at Butte High School in Arco, Idaho........a few years ago.

These apartments were purchased by the Church over 25 years ago to make it possible for temple missionaries to have affordable housing. Many of us could not be here if we were required to find and pay for housing in this expensive community.

The spring colors around the temple were vivid and in such a variety. The trees of every kind were numerous and beautiful.

Springtime in DC

Soon after getting settled in Kensington, MD, just north of Washington, DC, Lin and Arlene were able to spend a couple of days with us. Not only did they spend some time in the temple with us but we enjoyed the sites in DC. Cherry blossoms were in full bloom around the tidal basin and throughout the area. It was an awesome experience to see the monuments and memorials of our leaders and events that have shaped this great country.

MTC training for 10 days

Last week was a great week. Wish you could have experienced it with us because it is hard to put into words. Some words that come to mind are: intense, exciting, stressfull, spiritual, and fulfilling. Being jarred out of our comfort zone is sometimes necessary to help us see that we can do what we thought we could'nt. We were meeting and interacting with about 40 other couples going to all sorts of missions. This week we have training specific to our call. About 20 of us are receiving training at the Provo temple. At the conclusion Thursday afternoon we will drive to Heber City where we will stay overnight with Ben, Anne and their family before heading for Rapid City, SD.
